“From Him (Jesus) we learn how God acts toward people. The hypocritical, the basically insincere, will find Him cold and aloof, as they once found Jesus; but the penitent will find Him merciful; the self-condemned will find Him generous and kind. To the frightened He is friendly, to the poor in spirit He is forgiving, to the ignorant, considerate; to the weak, gentle; to the stranger, hospitable.”
Questions
1. Do you believe that God is really good?
2. How could doing things for God, not to earn God’s merit, but to just to follow God’s conditions for allowing his goodness be helpful to us as we think about doing things for God?

I’ll admit that I’ve struggled to believe this truth about God. There have been lots of times in my life where I have doubted God’s goodness and it’s really hampered me from doing things for God in those moments where I doubt his goodness. Thankfully he is good, and like Tozer said it’s written over every page in the Bible. I personally need to remember that I dwell under a friendly sky and that the things that I do for God are not to gain merit before God, but are just to follow the conditions he’s laid out to receive his blessing.
A lot of us have grown up in homes where your father’s treated you poorly and you had to earn you’re dad’s goodness by doing good things. Maybe you worked really hard at school, or at a sport so your dad would look at you with goodness. Well, that’s not the case with God. God already loves us and looks on us with goodness no matter what skills we have, he’s always looking at us with a loving smile not matter what we do. Anytime we have to repent or we get disciplined, it’s not to gain God’s respect but to follow his loving conditions he set out for us to discipline us and bring us back to the right place with him. God’s discipline comes from his goodness. That’s cool!
The relationship that Jesus had with God is totally available to us because God is good. Let’s follow God’s conditions to receive his blessing. Not because it makes us any better, but just because that’s the way he has established to receive it. What a good God we have!
